A tagged monarch butterfly. Photo: Doug Waters
The monarch butterfly migration is under way and many monarchs are making their way through our coastal counties now. Habitat loss is causing monarch populations to decline, but restoration projects, research and tagging are efforts to reverse the trend. Doug Waters of Morehead City tagged and photographed this specimen Sept. 11 in Cape Carteret.
“My wife Sarah and I have begun tagging the migrating monarchs,” Waters said. “We received our tags through Monarch Watch and will be returning all our tagging data to them with the hope it will help them better understand the migration of the declining populations of monarchs.”
