RALEIGH – Department of Environmental Quality Secretary Donald van der Vaart has demoted himself to another position in the agency in a move to avoid dismissal as Roy Cooper prepares to take office as governor, the News & Observer reported.
Van der Vaart has returned to a position in the air quality division, a job apparently protected from political firing.
The move takes effect Sunday, when Cooper takes office.
