NEW HANOVER COUNTY — The North Carolina Coastal Reserve and National Estuarine Research Reserve studies and protects shorebirds on Masonboro Island Reserve. The reserve posted this video on April 24.
Masonboro Island offers nesting habitat for birds including the American oystercatcher. Shorebird monitoring technicians collect data that can be used to study and protect this species.
The reserve’s mission is to promote informed management and stewardship of North Carolina’s estuarine and coastal habitats through research, education and example. North Carolina is home to four national reserve sites, Masonboro Island, Currituck Banks, Rachel Carson and Zeke’s Island, and six state reserve sites.
