OCRACOKE – After being awarded the $1.77 million emergency contract to reopen and repair N.C. 12, which is impassible due to Hurricane Dorian damage, RPC Contracting of Kitty Hawk were planning to move equipment to the site, the state announced Wednesday.
The target reopening date is Nov. 22, with incentives for opening early, but weather conditions may affect the timeline.
The final contract completion is April 30, to include dune reconstruction, planting dunes with seagrass, and placement of final pavement surface and markings.
The work will include sandbag installation, a reconstruction of the dune line protecting the roadway, complete rebuilding of about 1,000 feet of roadway and the state Ferry Division’s Dredge Manteo pumping sand from the old Hatteras ferry channel to supply sand for the reconstruction.
