The state Department of Environmental Quality has scheduled a public hearing Nov. 21 on draft permits to discharge wastewater and stormwater from the Southport Power Plant.

CPI USA North Carolina LLC has applied for the draft National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, or NPDES, permits for the plant at 1281 Powerhouse Drive, Southport. The facility discharges treated wastewater to the Atlantic Ocean below the Cape Fear River and discharges stormwater to Price Creek in the Cape Fear River Basin.
The draft wastewater permit is being reclassified as a major NPDES permit after a reevaluation of current activities at the facility, according to DEQ.
Speaker registration starts at 5 p.m. Nov. 21 and the meeting is at 6 p.m. at Brunswick Community College, Building A, 50 College Road, Bolivia. The comments provided during the public hearing will be considered in DEQ’s final determination regarding permit issuance and permit provisions.
The draft wastewater and stormwater permits are available online and printed copies of the draft permits and related documents can be reviewed at the department’s Wilmington Regional Office. Call 910- 796-7215 to schedule an appointment to review the documents.
