Undeterred by looming clouds and the threat of rain, passengers board the Island Ferry Express Thursday at Cape Lookout National Seashore’s Harkers Island visitor center to head to South Core Banks for a glimpse of the lighthouse, which is closed to climbing this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Though the lighthouse is closed, some services are available in addition to the passenger ferry. The Harkers Island visitor center and store are open as well as the Keepers’ Quarters Museum. The ferry service from Beaufort is available but the Beaufort visitor center on Front Street is closed.
South Core Banks, Shackleford Banks and North Core Banks are open for camping vehicles or tents, shelling and fishing allowed.
