The new shallow-draft hopper dredge currently under construction in Louisiana is expected to arrive on the Outer Banks next year.
Dare County released a video, “The New Dredge — ‘Miss Katie’ — Arriving April 2022,” first shown Monday at the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting, highlighting the vessel.
When the Miss Katie arrives next year, the dredge will be used to keep area channels and inlets open and accessible for commercial and recreational fishermen of the Outer Banks, according to the county.
The Dare County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a contract in 2021 for the construction and operation of the new shallow draft hopper dredge.
The new dredge is the a private-public partnership with the state that allow the county to keep its waterways navigable. it will be managed by the Oregon Inlet Task Force.
